Event Details

The online talk will cover the adventures of eight women, bird specialists, in one of the remotest areas of the Amazon Forest. Glaucia Del-Rio and Anna Hiller will talk about the first ornithological expedition lead and undertaken exclusively by women, the Emilie Snethlage Expedition.
The expedition honors an amazing woman, one of the most important Amazonian ornithologists, that described almost 40 bird taxa in the beginning of the twentieth century. Of all the Amazon’s major tributaries, the only one Emilie Snethlage never sampled was the Juruá River. Glaucia and Anna will talk about the Juruá birds, their days in the field and the remarkable scientific discoveries made in their trip!

Glaucia Del-Rio was the Snethlage expedition leader. She is a field and museum ornithologist doing her PhD with Drs. Robb Brumfield and Brant Faircloth at LSU (Louisiana State University). Glaucia works with the Harlequin Antbird, an obligate army-ant-following antbird described by Emilie Snethlage in 1907.

Anna Hiller is an ornithologist from the LSU Museum of Natural Science. She is a PhD candidate working with Drs. Brant Faircloth and Robb Brumfield. Anna aims to understand shared patterns of diversification of birds in Andean flowerpiercers (genus Diglossa).
