The 40th annual Wings Over Camarillo is considered one of the best air shows in California, but it offers so much more than watching planes fly through the sky and beautiful weather. From airborne aerobatics to a classic and exotic car show to STEM activities for kids, there is something for all ages. Here are the five top reasons to go to Wings Over Camarillo August 21 and August 22 at the Camarillo Airport:
1. Spectacular aviation performances and pyrotechnics!
Get ready for unbelievably daring feats from some of the best pilots around. Breathlessly watch a nimble Pitts Special corkscrewing, tumbling, and even flying vertically through the air. There will also be military planes made famous for their roles in foreign wars, a PT-19 Stearman biplane, formation parachute jumpers, a water drop demonstration from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office Air Unit, and much, much more. And if that isn’t enough, be sure to look for the pyrotechnics show occurring during specific performances and ending with the massive Wall of Fire as the grand finale. The best part is all the action comes to you! Pick a good spot on the flight line, bring a chair and enjoy the show above.
Please note: This list may change at the last moment due to unforeseen weather, aircraft, pilot conditions or other. Plan to get there early as flight line seating areas are limited and on a first come, first served basis.
2. See dozens of rare planes and cars on display
How many times have you stood next to a Japanese Zero, an original C53 Skytrooper, and a Supermarine Spitfire… all at the same time? Many of the aircraft you will see flying during the day are also available to view on the ground at the static airplane display. Meet the pilots, ask questions and even get up close and personal with the airplanes. You don’t get that at every plane show!
Tired of looking up? Check out the Classic/Exotic Car and Motorcycle Show featuring vehicles from multiple decades. And don’t forget to line up for the classic car and motorcycle parade on Saturday and Sunday around 1:30 p.m.
3. There will be helicopter rides!
If just seeing cool aircraft isn’t enough for you, Orbic Helicopters is offering helicopter rides for visitors before and after the air show performances for an additional fee. Take in stunning views of the nearby hills and mountains from the air and cross off that bucket list item of flying in a helicopter.
Rides will be offered Saturday and Sunday from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and after the air show on Saturday at 5 p.m. Cost is $70 per person and rides will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis, or you can pre-book your seat by calling (805) 389-1070. Visit www.orbichelicopters.com for more information about tours, charters and flight training.
4. Kids can learn about STEM with hands-on activities
Take the whole family to the Wings Over Camarillo STEM Pavilion for the chance to see drones and robotics in action, learn how airplanes fly, create all types of flying objects, and many more fun activities. Plus, the Gold Coast Robotics Alliance will be hosting its second annual Wings Over Camarillo FIRST Robotics Competition!
The STEM Pavillion highlights what’s new in aviation and aerospace and other Science, Technology, Engineering and Math fields. It’s a place for families and learn about education opportunities and STEM programs in the area.
5. There’s so much to do in Camarillo!
When you’re not at Wings Over Camarillo, you’re going to need a comfortable place to stay. Camarillo lodging options make you feel like you never left the comfort of your own home. Rest and relax at one of our delightful hotels, motels, or inns.
Of course, there’s more to Camarillo than cool planes and comfortable hotels.
