Wings Over Camarillo: “Honoring Our Korean War Veterans”

Every year, thousands of people flock to the sunny hills of Camarillo for the annual Wings Over Camarillo Airshow. This high-octane event, full of excitement, fun, and activities for the whole family, attracts aviation enthusiasts from far and wide. It’s not just a gathering of airshow lovers, however; this event also pays homage to the heroes of military conflicts, and provides an opportunity to appreciate and show gratitude to the courageous individuals who fought for our freedom. This year’s theme is… Korean War Veterans! Today, we’re exploring how 2023’s show is paying tribute to these veterans, and giving you a sneak peek into what can be expected from this year’s air show extravaganza! As the show takes flight, let us remember the sacrifices made by these brave veterans, ensuring that their legacy lives on in the hearts and minds of future generations.

Honoring Veterans of the Korean War

You may know that between 1950 and 1953, the United States was engaged in a conflict known as the Korean War. American troops were a vital part of the efforts to push back North Korean forces during these early years of the Cold War, resulting in a divided Korea with the establishment of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) along the 38th parallel (the original border between the two countries). The war’s legacy continues to shape the geopolitics of the region as North and South Korea remain technically at war, with ongoing efforts to foster peace and reunification.

Meet Elmer “Royce” Williams, 2023’s Grand Marshall

We’re thrilled to announce that this year’s Grand Marshall for Wings Over Camarillo is none other than Elmer “Royce” Williams, an aviation legend known for his exceptional bravery and skill as a fighter pilot. Williams pulled off a tremendously daring achievement in aviation by surviving one of the longest aerial dogfights in U.S. military history, single handedly taking on seven Soviet MiG-15 fighter jets— and downing four of them— during a 35-minute battle for sky supremacy in 1952. When the encounter was over, he landed with 263 holes in the side of his F9F-5 Panther fighter, all 760 rounds of 20mm shells on board his plane fired and gone. At the risk of escalating already-delicate Cold War tensions, Williams was sworn to secrecy about his feat for more than 50 years. Today, stories of his courage are legendary, and his presence at Wings Over Camarillo serves as inspiration by reminding us of the extraordinary individuals who defend our freedom and shape the course of history.
