Learning Reimagined: kidSTREAM Fosters Hands-On Education in Camarillo
KidSTREAM, an interactive children’s museum designed to engage families, caregivers, and their young explorers through play and curiosity, has opened its doors in Camarillo. Join the Camarillo community in celebrating this exciting resource as it continues to evolve and innovate the way we think about educational activities.
The Story Behind The Vision
What once started as an idea shared with a few close friends around a kitchen table has since grown into the innovative children’s museum we now know as KidSTREAM. Located at the former Camarillo Public Library site (3100 E. Ponderosa Dr.), this exciting addition to the community was made possible through the collective efforts of early visionaries, dedicated volunteers, and local supporters who share a belief in the power of science and accessible learning.
Since becoming a nonprofit organization, KidSTREAM has reached more than 55,000 children and families in Ventura County by creating a dynamic learning environment underlined by the six pillars of “STREAM”: Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, and Math. The museum is grounded in the research showing that play is a leading factor in healthy childhood development and an essential component of making learning both accessible and meaningful. By providing an engaging, child-led environment, KidSTREAM provides the opportunity for kids of all ages, abilities, and learning styles to become critical thinkers and lifelong learners.
Inside The Experience
Open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Sundays from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM, the museum’s 30,000-square-foot campus will include approximately 21,000 square feet of immersive indoor and outdoor exhibits rooted in research and inspired by Ventura County’s landscapes and industries. These spaces encourage curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking in young learners by providing an engaging environment for kids to explore, play, and discover.
Outdoor Exploration
The outside exhibits include a Channel Islands exhibit, which allows children to excavate replicas of pygmy mammoth bones in a fossil dig. Additionally, the outdoor exploration-based exhibits feature a camping section, a farmers’ market section, a greenhouse with real plants, a climbable tractor, and a cooking station that includes fruits and vegetables to reflect Ventura County’s farming roots.
Indoor Educational Activities
Inside, the plan is for children to be able to explore the museum’s STREAM gallery and encounter everyday materials as they tackle building challenges in the museum’s makerspace, an engineering design lab. While limited during phase 1, the indoor area will still include rich, hands-on learning experiences everyone can enjoy.
